This three-week course will be about learning to paint landscapes in oil through demonstrations, lectures and critiques. Students will learn how to break down the complexities of nature and urban environments into simple forms. Simplification will be the emphasis, but refinement will also be discussed and demonstrated. Students may work from life or photo reference.

Course Outline

Week 1: Quick studies on small supports:

• Instructor lecture on materials
• Instructor slide presentation/lecture on shape-based painters and 5 pillars of good painting
• Instructor slide presentation/lecture using preliminary sketches to simplify and organize values
• Instructor demo
• Students make 2-3 small paintings that take about 3 hours (or less) each

Week 2: Using the palette knife

• Critique on work from week 1
• Instructor demo on using the palette knife for blocking in a landscape painting
• Students make 2 paintings using the palette knife to block in

Week 3: Tackling architecture

• Critique on work from week 2
• Lecture/Presentation on basic observational perspective
• Instructor demo on painting landscapes with architectural elements
• Students make 1-2 paintings incorporating some kind of architectural element
• Final critique
